When I was younger, I was constantly reminded that "empty vessels make the most noise". As a chatty individual, this was an expression I was not so fond of!
In our workplaces, we are often surrounded by chatty, loud and opinionated individuals.
Over the years, I have become quieter (sometimes). I no longer feel the need to be heard or to offer my opinion, and I find contentment in quiet. This quiet has allowed me to tap into the nuances of the introvert.
Many introverts I have coached tell a similar story.
They do have plenty of ideas and contributions to make during meetings; however, they prefer to flesh out these ideas before sharing them.
Also, many introverts find interviews excruciatingly difficult. Having to sit and talk about themselves in a quick-fire round is often their worst nightmare.
Common introverted traits?
They generally
Feel more energised by having alone time
Prefer tasks that don't involve group activities and can be done independently
Favour real clarity and predictability
Process thoughts internally before sharing
Do not want to talk about themselves or their private lives
Introvert team contributions
Deep Focus: Producing high-quality output through intense concentration
Thoughtful Decisions: Considering various options before making decisions
Calmness: Excelling in pressure environments
Active Listening: Taking it all in, even if they don't appear to be
How might you get the best from that introverted team member?
Respect - The big one!
Respect their wish to be quiet
Respect their need for space to think
Respect their pace of response
Respect their desire to engage their brain before engaging their mouth
Stop talking, pause and ask for input, giving them time to respond
Allow them to share ideas in other ways, such as emails or through a colleague
Ask them how they would like to engage and remind them their input is valuable
Recognising and valuing the unique contributions of introverts can significantly enhance team dynamics and performance by providing an inclusive environment for all personality types to thrive.
