Career Meaning is More Important than Career Purpose," the key to a satisfying career lies in the combination of what you love to do, what you are good at and engaging your strengths most of the time.

Understanding Job Purpose vs. Job Meaning

Job Purpose is about having a broader goal or mission that your work is aimed at achieving. It’s the long-term vision that drives you and aligns with your company’s objectives. Purpose gives you a sense of direction but can sometimes feel distant and abstract.

Job Meaning, on the other hand, is the personal fulfilment and sense of significance you get from your day-to-day tasks. It’s about feeling engaged and knowing that your work makes a difference, not just in the long term, but in your immediate environment.

The Harvard Perspective

The Harvard Business Review highlights that while purpose is essential for guiding career choices, it is the meaning that sustains motivation and job satisfaction. Finding meaning in your work can lead to greater engagement, better mental well-being, and overall job satisfaction.

Steps to Transition from Job Purpose to Job Meaning

Identify What You Love to Do

Reflect on the activities and tasks that make you feel energised and fulfilled. These are often the moments when you are most engaged and lose track of time. I often ask clients a question my teacher Mother-in-Law asked the kids. When you are in school and teacher asks you to take out a book, which book did you look forward to most? Maths, English, History, Art and so.

My first joy was always when teacher said it was yard time, and I still love being out doors. However my next joy was always English & history and all the adventures this held.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What activities make me excited to start my day?

  • What hobbies or interests do I lose myself in?

  • When do I feel most creative and inspired?

Recognise Your Strengths

Understanding your strengths can help you find roles that are not only fulfilling but also allow you to excel. Strengths are the natural talents and skills that come easily to you.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What tasks do I perform with ease and excellence?

  • What strengths do others consistently acknowledge in me?

  • Which skills do I enjoy using the most?

Align Your Skills with Your Job

Once you have identified your likes and strengths, look for ways to integrate them into your current role. This might involve seeking out projects that align with your interests or suggesting new initiatives that play to your strengths.

Steps to take:

  • Volunteer for projects that excite you.

  • Propose new ideas that leverage your skills and passions.

  • Seek feedback and opportunities for growth in areas you enjoy.

Find Meaning in Daily Tasks

Look for ways to find personal fulfilment in your everyday work. This might mean focusing on the aspects of your job that make a difference to others, whether it's helping a colleague, solving a customer’s problem, or contributing to a larger goal in small but significant ways.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • How does my work impact others?

  • What small victories can I celebrate each day?

  • How can I make a positive difference in my workplace?

  • Consider volunteering to onboard new starters or mentor others

Reflect and Adjust

Regularly reflect on your work experiences and adjust your approach as needed. This reflection can help you stay aligned with what brings you meaning and fulfilment.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • Am I feeling fulfilled and engaged in my work?

  • What changes can I make to increase my job satisfaction?

  • How can I continue to grow and develop my strengths?

Conclusion

Transitioning from job purpose to job meaning involves a deep understanding of what you like to do, recognising your strengths, and finding ways to integrate them into your daily tasks. According to Harvard’s research, focusing on the meaning in your work can lead to greater job satisfaction, sustained motivation, and overall well-being. By taking proactive steps to align your career with your passions and strengths, you can craft a fulfilling and meaningful professional journey.
